NIGEL CLARK & TOM MACNIVEN QUINTET CELEBRATE BOBBY WELLINS
The concert will be preceded by a screening of 'Dream Are Free' - the documentary film celebrating talented musician, composer and great storyteller - the legendary jazz musician Bobby Wellins.
Bobby Wellins’ tenor saxophone was one of the most distinctive sounds in British jazz. Best remembered for his haunting contributions to Stan Tracey’s classic Under Milk Wood album in the 1960s, Bobby went on to influence countless musicians through his playing, his teaching and his compositions and he touched audiences for decades with his always soulful improvising. A late career highlight came when his Culloden Moor Suite was rearranged and recorded by the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra with Bobby as featured soloist.
This concert, featuring musicians who were directly involved with and affected by Bobby, honours a great Scot. Guitarist Nigel Clark was set on the jazz path he follows today by the encouragement Bobby showed him as a young player looking for a new direction and SNJO trumpeter Tom MacNiven revisits his “Guess What?” album with another SNJO stalwart, Konrad Wiszniewski taking the tenor saxophone role that Bobby memorably filled on the recording. Saxophonist Helena Kay, the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2015, for which Bobby sat on the judging panel during his last visit to Glasgow Jazz Festival, will also feature as a special guest with Tom MacNiven’s quintet.
