“Blue Collar is the American dream. If you’re rich you can buy it. If you’re anything else, you gotta fight for it.”
Neon Dreams kicks off our “Spectacular ‘70s” season with Paul Schrader’s powerhouse directorial debut. Coming hot off the success of Taxi Driver, Schrader set his sights on a tale of Detroit auto-workers (Richard Pryor, Harvey Kietel, and Yaphet Kotto) who, fed up with toxic management and practices, hatch a plan to rob their union.
Lauded by Bruce Springsteen as one of his all-time favourite films and included in Spike Lee’s “List of Films All Aspiring Filmmakers Must See,” Blue Collar is headlined by a mesmerizing dramatic performance from Richard Pryor that taps into his rarely-seen dynamic range and vulnerability. “Inspired by stories of real-life disillusionment," Blue Collar is a ferocious examination of race and its intersection with the working class--making it just as relevant today as it was in 1978.
