Description
The Neighbourhood Justice Centre – Australia’s first community justice centre – opened in Collingwood in 2007. The centre addresses the underlying causes of offending to stop the cycle of crime and works with the local community to increase access to justice. It incorporates a multi-jurisdictional court, an integrated team of community services, and innovative justice programs. In 1945, Percy Everett designed the original building at 241 Wellington Street, which has housed boot makers, a police station and a TAFE. In 2006, Lyons Architects redesigned the building and created a welcoming community space that reflects the centres community justice and therapeutic jurisprudence principles. Take a peek inside the operations of Australia’s first community justice centre by coming for a tour of the site on 28 July.
