Description
On Friday, December 7, 2018, Music of Reality presents “Computed Futures”, an interdisciplinary concert in collaboration with Harvard professor and mathematician Chris Rycroft and his lab, cellist Olivia J. P. Harris, and electronic musician Jeremy Stewart.
Is our universe a ticking clock, its movements waiting to be predicted? Or, can the wings of a butterfly give rise to an unknowable future? Chris Rycroft and his lab use mathematical modeling techniques to simulate a diverse array of real world phenomena, from the motion of solids and liquids in space, to the growth and behavior of living creatures. Over the course of three lectures, they will present a wide variety of the lab’s projects - each aiming to stretch the bounds of predictability in the physical and organic world.
Interspersed with these lectures will be musical performances forming a dialogue with the research. Electronic artist Jeremy Stewart will livecode a musical set that draws its sound directly from the lab’s simulations. Physical data will be flowing to Stewart in real-time, to be interpreted as the musical parameters of space, rhythm, and timbre via a software program written live during the performance.
Cellist Olivia J. P. Harris will perform works by Mira Calix and Trevor Weston that explore themes of future fate, lost memories, and the evolving dialogue between humans and machines.
10% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Green Cambridge. Learn more at: www.greencambridge.org
