Description
Rebellions, as the films in this program manifest, can last a lifetime. The first film animates the persistent and sonorous protest of the Chilean poet, Violeta Parra, against social injustice. In the second the uprising of a maladjusted teenager becomes ever more consequential as a political conflict in his community and the bad relationship with his parents put into question certain principles of his Mapuche upbringing. Shaky identity politics and political frustrations alike threaten the conviction of these marginal protagonists with every private victory they achieve, leaving audiences to reflect on the scale in which political victories can be measured.
