Description
If you're joining us tonight for MIGRANTS with Joe Kye, Ching Ching Wong, and the Assembly, here are some tips to help you best enjoy your experience:
Doors open at 7:30pm; please be in your seats by 8:00pm.
Please note that MIGRANTS will be filmed and a camera crew will be present.
NAVEL is located at 1611 S Hope Street. The direct entrance to our space is located through a large black gate on Venice Blvd. Enter through the first door on the left just past the gate.
If you're arriving via Lyft/Uber (which we highly recommend), use 418 Venice Blvd., 90015 as your destination and this will drop you off right in front of the black gate.
If you're arriving via Metro, the closest station is the Pico Station on the Blue & Expo Lines.
Self parking is available in our rooftop parking lot for $10, cash only, payable to the Unified Parking staff onsite. We recommend street parking (or Lyft/Uber/Public Transport!).
Our bar is cash-preferred, but we also accept Venmo and credit card. Food from KOBUNGA Korean Grill is included in the ticket price and will be served during intermission. Stick around after the performance has ended to meet the artists, drink wine & beer, eat, and converse.
If you have any questions, feel free to send them to info@theassemblydance.co.
We look forward to seeing you tonight!
JOIN WEST COAST ARTISTS Joe Kye (Violinist-looper, PDX), Ching Ching Wong (Dancer, PDX), The Assembly Dance (Creative Producer, OC/LA), Darin Reyes (Projection artist, Sac), Byron Roman (Dancer, SF), and Tatiana Barber, Christopher Bordenave, Lindsey Matheis, and Charbel Rohayem (Dancers, LA) in a single convergent evening of live music and movement. The performance/party will celebrate the release of Kye's brand-new album, Migrants, and will kick off Kye and Wong's international tour to Nepal, Japan, China, Israel, South Korea, San Francisco, and NYC, as it continually refers back to the diverse paths and ancestries that describe humanity. Guests will ascend to the top floor of NAVEL, a contemporary loft in DTLA where they'll enjoy complimentary small plates from Kobunga BBQ; beer and wine for purchase; and an intimate music and dance performance that will also involve them in the creation of a communal art piece.
Violinist-looper/composer Joe Kye will release his new album, Migrants in Los Angeles as part of his international tour at NAVEL (1611 S. Hope St) on December 9. Born in Korea and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Kye will present an eclectic, interactive evening filled with music, movement, and emotional exuberance.
Joining Kye will be co-producer The Assembly, an LA-based contemporary dance group dedicated to bringing together community with the human body’s expressive potential. Co-founder Lara Wilson will contribute contemporary choreography inspired by the many languages, cultures, and experiences in Los Angeles. Additionally, Kye will premiere his eponymous work, Migrants, a collaborative piece for music, dance, and interactive projection art, with internationally-acclaimed dancer Ching Ching Wong, currently of the the NW Dance Project.
During the performance, attendees will be invited to participate in the creation of a communal art piece that catalogues the diverse paths and ancestries that have led each individual to the show. Wong and Kye will perform the piece together around the world, with stops in Nepal, Los Angeles, Japan, San Francisco, China, Israel, South Korea, and NYC.
A multi-disciplinary exploration of identity, culture, and the spirit of human migration, Migrants will also include tales of immigration from Kye and Wong’s personal journeys. The show explores many themes relevant to a rapidly globalizing world: the celebration of roots, cross-cultural migration, and the need to recognize universal humanity across borders and artificial boundaries. At its conclusion, Migrants will offer audiences an opportunity to root themselves in their local community while simultaneously seeing themselves as part of a global village.
