Training Program Syllabus
Session 1 - April 30th: Delivering Culturally Competent Childbirth Education
In this section, we explore what a childbirth educator is, the values that they carry in the work, and the ways personal experiences impact the way we show up in the classroom. Next, we delve into sacred anatomy and paths to parenthood.
Session 2 - May 2nd: Reclaiming Bodily Autonomy
We will kick off this unit with an exploration of consent—what it is, what it is not, and what it looks like within various birth settings. Next, we’ll take a deeper look into the role of trauma, which covers the trauma that clients may bring to the birth setting, and the trauma that can unfortunately stem from the experiences many face during their reproductive journeys. Central to a positively memorable birthing and pregnancy experience is the avoidance of this kind of trauma, and so, for our last section of this unit, we will work to equip you with some boundary-setting tools that can keep the care team on track.
Session 3 - May 7th: Comfort and Care during Pregnancy
Pregnancy comes with a variety of experiences, both pleasant and unpleasant. During the course, we will characterize a few and talk about comfort measures and techniques that can assist those on the journey.
Session 4 - May 9th: Navigating Labor and Birth Support
The moment is here! This unit touches on all things labor and birth. We will talk about the various stages of labor, and comfort measures that can ease the experience at every stage as the birthing person prepares to meet their baby. Additionally, we will explore birth in its full scope—measures to help clients prepare for the big moment, the birth plan, deviations from the birth plan, and ways to manage.
Session 5 - May 14th: Abortion, Miscarriage, Loss and Community Care
In this section, we explore the different types of abortion, miscarriage, and loss that can be experienced, ways to navigate these experiences and provide self and community care strategies to support you throughout your journey.
Session 6 - May 16th: Postpartum Wellness and Care
The time after childbirth is equally as significant as the time leading up to it. In this unit, we will talk about postpartum healing, with an emphasis on mental health.
Session 7 - May 21st: Infant Feeding and Early Newborn Care
The health of a growing infant has implications for the health of its birthing parent. We will talk about infant feeding and nutrition, and newborn care overall. By the end of this unit, you should feel more comfortable informing new parents about their options.
Session 8 - May 23rd: Facilitation Skills and Sustainable Business Practices
By the end of the course, we’re sure you’ll all want to get out there and practice. Our facilitation and business training unit accounts for this. We’ll discuss strategies for getting your practice off the ground, and discuss strategies for framing your new practice around your unique skill set.
No Prerequisites: This course is available to everyone regardless of background.
