MEERNAA (8.30pm)Meernaa is Carly Bond’s beautiful, freaky dream. When you listen to her songs, you have the feeling of walking alone in the woods, sometimes spooked and sometimes elated and you are uncertain whether or not you will wake up in a familiar place. The group is comprised of Carly Bond (guitar/vocals), Rob Shelton (keys), Andrew Maguire (drums) and Doug Stuart (bass; also of Bells Atlas).
Bond formed Meernaa with Rob Shelton in Oakland in 2015. They are natural collaborators (both engineers at John Vanderslice’s legendary Tiny Telephone studio) who draw influence from the environments of the Bay Area, where the shift between dramatic landscapes can be hard to perceive.
Bond’s songs are expansive and arresting; what starts as an amorous croon can transform into a full psychedelic eruption. The group creates a backdrop of syrupy grooves that allow Bond’s seemingly ancient voice to take the listener through moments of catharsis and moments of play. Meernaa doesn’t fit squarely into a single genre; at times it feels like a fantasy designed by Solange and Grizzly Bear on mushrooms. Like a true spirit quest, Meernaa will allow you to let go of something you didn’t know you were holding.
The debut EP Strange Life is just out on Native Cat Recordings.

BELLS ATLAS (7.30pm)
Soulful noise pop, inspired, propellent psych pop … Trying to nail down the sound of Bells Atlas is a bit like narrating the inner workings of a kaleidoscope – where it's more about tripping out than nailing it down.
A surreal blend of R&B, psychedelia, jazz, and pop, rooted in the cultural bellwether of Oakland, CA, Bells Atlas has shared the stage with acts such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Badbadnotgood, Meshell, Bilal, Angélique Kidjo and more. They have also been the touring band for NPR’s Snap Judgment since 2016, and recently wrapped up a sold-out tour with Alabama Shakes lead singer Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes) side project Bermuda Triangle.
Channeling at once the ramshackle lo-fi beats of Tune-Yards and the sighing lullabies of Sade, Bells is like the passing bubbles of an unknown aquatic lifeform, music percolates from depths untaken, playing in a deep blue pool of life, death and the fluid in-between.
2018 promises to be a big year for Bells Atlas ! as they return from a one year retreat with the driving drums of anticipated new single and video Be Brave (out June 29th on 10” vinyl), a full length LP and accompanying EP of all-original material with club dates throughout the US.
"Bells Atlas are an Oakland four-piece crafting angular, entrancing tunes — last year's Hyperlust EP was a tightly crafted and soulful piece of Afropop futurism... uplifting and handling a non-commitment to genre both skillfully and with a sense of euphoria." - The FADER
"Eminently chill and sexy in equal measure but with out of this world complexity and musical sophistication".... "This is the kind of record that kickstarts movements"- Afropunk
"The California band sound alluringly exotic... they're the complete mystical package." - NME
