Overview:Join The Leica Akademie USA as we introduce students to the world of action and combat sports with former UFC Chief Photographer and Photo Director, James Law.James will be taking The Leica Akademie in-the-ring to follow the story of combat sport athletes. Students will have full access to real-life sparring and training sessions with professional MMA athletes. James will cover in-the-ring shooting techniques, athletic portraiture in the gym for magazine cover shoots, and editorial / journalism style shots throughout the day giving students a real-world experienceStudents will have hands-on all access to a large selection Leica camera bodies all in the same same day. We will be providing a variety of Leica Cameras to shoot with. We will also be introducing students to our newest member of the family, the versatile Leica SL.Topics covered:Approach to photographing athletes.
Fundamentals of combat and action sports photography
Technical choices, choosing the right equipment for the job.
Studio and on-location lighting.
Capturing a live sparring match.
Workflow and memory card management
Editing and Retouching process.
Agenda:This three day workshop will begin at the Leica Store in Los Angeles at 2:30 p.m. on March 18th with an introduction to combat sports photography fundamentals and project assignment. Basic Leica camera operation will be covered by North America Leica Akademie Trainer, Philip Cuenco. Though this is a Leica Akademie, the workshop is open to non-Leica Camera owners as well. Students are encouraged to use their own current gear if that is what you prefer. The Leica M, SL, and S operation will be covered. Leica Cameras will be available for use throughout the day.Saturday, class will transition to Downtown Los Angeles, at one of the best Muay Thai Training Gyms in the United States; "The Yard Muay Thai". The Yard is run by co-founder legendary world-reknown trainer Mark Komuro and training home of Joe Schilling, The #1 Middleweight GLORY Kickboxing Champion.Sunday, class will resume back at The Leica Store Los Angeles for the most important part of class, the editorial process. Students will come to class prepared with already narrowed down shots of their Saturday shoot and produce a final visual story with the guidance and feedback of Law's critique. Who should take this workshop?This experience will be perfect for anyone who has ever looked at a sports or action photo and wondered - how did they do that/ I want to do that! People who are interested in putting themselves in a highly active shooting environment that involves quick thinking and a little realistic work pressure. Anyone who intends on photographing MMA, boxing, jiu-jitsu, or any form of sports photography in the future. Anyone who wants to get access to the Leica lineup deciding which camera may be right for them. Photographers who have not had access to shoot in an athletes, but have always wanted to, will gain the most from this experience. BASIC camera operational knowledge and photography fundamentals in ISO, aperture, shutter speed, composition a must. Instructor:James Law is an award winning photographer currently residing in Los Angeles; born in Southern California and raised in Aspen, Colorado. Law has a knack for seeing things from a unique perspective and began his photography career in 2007 keeping that simple tenant in mind. A versatile shooter with accolades in sports photography, advertising, and fashion, he has a love for adventure shooting that is evident in list of personalities and locales he's shot. His feature in Popular Photography and American Photo magazine gave an in depth look at his approach to shooting that details his range of work from the studio to the streets. In 2014, his work was seen in New York Times T-Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, UFC magazine, Details Magazine, as well as a national advertising campaign for Xyience Energy Drink and contribution to Stampd Los Angeles.
