TheatreMaking with Deborah Wallace
Deborah discusses her work in Viewpoints, Composition, and Documentary Theatre. We’ll explore how work for the stage gets made using these disciplines and participants will have the opportunity to experiment and create live with the form.
Deborah Wallace is an Emmy-nominated Producer, Writer, Director, and Performer working in both film and theatre. As Co-Artistic Director of the multi award-winning International WOW Company she collaborated on the production of more than 20 works for the stage and screen including the Academy Award nominated, Emmy winning documentary film, Gasland. Deborah produced its sequel Gasland, Part II for HBO, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013 and went on to win the Environmental Media Association Award for Best Documentary, Cinema Eye Honors and an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Research. In addition, Wallace produced the films The Sky is Pink, Divest, Occupy Sandy, and How To Let Go Of The World And Love All The Things Climate Can’t Change which was released by HBO in 2016. She produced and co-wrote, Blood on the Mountain, a documentary feature detailing the struggle for labor rights in the coalmines of West Virginia, which was released by Netflix in 2017, honored by the International Documentary Association, and for which she received another Emmy nomination for Outstanding Historical Documentary. Most recently Wallace served as executive producer for Brave Girls, which premiered at DOCNYC. She is at work on the documentary features Soil Brothers, and Poplarism. As a performer in the theatre, Wallace has been honored to tour nationally and internationally with some of the most acclaimed artists in the world including: Anne Bogart/SITI Company (Radio Macbeth, Café Variations, The Event Of A Thread), Ann Hamilton, Richard Foreman and John Zorn (Astronome). She has been in residence and/or presented workshops at Grinnell College, University of Notre Dame, Chiang Mai Art Museum, University of Maryland, Emerson College, New York University and New York Stage and Film among others. She has lately been touring internationally with the experimental music/theatre collective, Object Collection, with whom she has released three records: Cheap & Easy, It’s All True and You Are Under Our Space Control. As a Director and Playwright, Wallace’s work has been presented at HERE Arts (Psyche), New Dance Group (Agnes/Martha), Ars Nova, The Ohio Theatre (Psyche), The Incubator Arts Project (The Void, The Red Book), ODU Theatre (Niobe, HOMEsick). Deborah is also a recent addition to film faculty at Old Dominion University.
