"Shoot him again…his soul’s still dancing."
-- Lieutenant Terence McDonagh
It’s been a decade since Herzog and Cage teamed up to deliver us one of the decade’s most depraved, yet wildly romantic neo-noir fever dreams. And Neon Dreams Cinema Club, in partnership with Ladies of Burlesque plan to celebrate this anniversary with a Cage-tastic tribute on the big screen. So get out your “lucky crack pipe” and be prepared for an explosively hypnotic performance from respected thespian Nicolas Cage, in one his most burlesque performances (bur·lesque /ˌbərˈlesk/ verb: cause to appear absurd by parodying or copying in an exaggerated form).
Cage plays recently promoted (bad) police lieutenant Terence McDonagh, whose work-related back injury results in a debilitating addiction to painkillers (as well as the reliance on generous portions of heroin). Once McDonagh’s heroin supplies provided by the drug evidence lock-up run dry, he turns to the drug dealers he’s tasked with locking up, while also attempting to solve the murders of five Senegalese immigrants.
Bizarre in its devotion to reptilian sidekicks and aquatic metaphors, BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS, which quizzically bears no relationship to Abel Ferrara’s 1992 similarly titled film, contributed an epic team-up between meme-A-listers Cage and Herzog. Under Herzog’s direction, "Nicolas Cage is as good as anyone since Klaus Kinski at portraying a man whose head is exploding. It's a hypnotic performance” (Roger Ebert). Consider this screening a prelude to more Cage to come in 2020!
