Kara Walker is an artist best known for her candid investigation of race, gender, sexuality, and violence through silhouetted figures; her work has appeared in numerous exhibitions internationally. She is the recipient of many awards, notably a MacArthur Fellowship and the United States Artists Eileen Harris Norton Fellowship. Walker is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Philosophical Society. She has also been named an Honorary Royal Academician by the Royal Academy of Arts, London.
Thelma Golden is the director and chief curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, one of the world’s leading institutions devoted to visual art by people of African descent. Under her leadership, the Studio Museum has gained increased renown as a global leader in the exhibition of contemporary art, a center for innovative education, and a cultural anchor in the Harlem community. Previously, Golden was a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she launched her influential curatorial practice.
