Bridget Coughlin
CEO of Shedd Aquarium
Bridget C. Coughlin, Ph.D., serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the world-renowned Shedd Aquarium. Under her leadership, 1.9 million aquarium guests each year enjoy innovative experiences that are focused on Shedd’s Mission of compassion, curiosity and conservation for the aquatic animal world. Shedd is a founding member of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership, and Dr. Coughlin has played a critical role in guiding this organization’s work to reduce global plastic waste and advance the protection of marine sanctuaries. In 2017, as a leader in this partnership, Dr. Coughlin was a member of the U.S. delegation to the Our Ocean Conference in Malta where she represented 19 U.S. aquariums in the commitment to ultimately eliminate the use of single-use plastics across business operations.Before joining Shedd, Dr. Coughlin served as vice president of strategic partnerships and programs and adjunct curator at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS), establishing a globally recognized health exhibit and community-focused National Institute of Health-funded Genetics of Taste Lab. Prior to DMNS, she spent five years with the National Academy of Sciences, where she served as managing editor of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She has also led research teams funded by the National Institutes of Health, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. A Colorado native, Dr. Coughlin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College, a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Iowa and an executive scholar certificate in finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Julia (Bucciero) Weiss
Director of Communications, CoinFlipIndustries/expertise: Communications, public relations
Julia began her career in the publishing industry, working in public relations and communications for Time, Newsweek, Details, and Brides, before being drawn to the fast-paced and challenging field of tech. She first designed and launched the PR program for the charity fundraising platform CrowdRise; after its acquisition by GoFundMe, in January 2017, she continued to lead media partnership efforts. She then joined direct-to-consumer online plant retailer Bloomscape, helping them to reach $7 million in Series A funding. Having moved back to Chicago, Julia started at CoinFlip in 2021. There, she is responsible for the company’s entire communications program, including media relations, thought leadership, consumer relations, and corporate and internal communications. Under her leadership, CoinFlip has been featured in news outlets such as CNBC, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal, earning over 8 billion media impressions—with more to come, as the company continues to expand globally and build its suite of product offerings.
Julie Sarne
Former Senior Strategy Consultant, DeloitteIndustries/expertise: Consulting, public relations
Julie earned her BA in Public Policy from the University of Michigan and moved to Washington, D.C. to work in public affairs consulting. Starting as an Associate and ending as a Director, she developed analysis, communications, and strategic guidance for companies and nonprofits related to economic policy issues. After 4 years, Julie returned to the University of Michigan to pursue her MBA at the Ross School of Business and focused on strategy, marketing, and social impact. Following graduation, Julie moved back to Chicago and became a Senior Strategy Consultant at Deloitte. In her tenure at Deloitte, she largely worked on sustainability and business transformation strategy for retail/consumer product clients. Julie is currently on the job hunt for roles focusing on strategy, customer loyalty, and sustainability.
Ali Pohn
Director of Marketing, Admissions and Communications, British International School Chicago, South Loop Industries/expertise: communications, marketing, market research, education
Throughout Ali’s entire career, children and families have been her primary focus. She has run successful marketing and branding initiatives for schools, toy companies, Internet/media companies, market research companies, marketing agencies and her own family-and-child-focused marketing, market research and innovation consulting firm. Most recently has taken on the role of Director of Marketing, Admissions and Communications for British International School Chicago, South Loop.Ali has worked in kids’ television and was a pioneer in kids’ internet. She has developed educational materials and established and marketed creative enrichment programs for grade-schoolers. She has authored humor, parenting, children, and young adult books. Ali holds a B.S. in Elementary Education from Northwestern University and is a graduate of The Second City Training Program.
Throughout the event, there will be time for networking sessions and buffet-style appetizers.
