LEATHER CRAFTING
This class will have students learning the basics of leatherworking. Students will learn about the different types of leather and their uses. Students will create simple projects while perfecting basic leather working techniques, first learning to use a sewing machine for thinner pieces of leather then moving up to laser cutting for thicker materials.
Class is 3 hours a week for 6 weeks and will include a limited supply of materials so students taking on larger projects may need to purchase materials. Thankfully, the TTL Makerspace is located in the heart of the textile district and we have several leather supply stores nearby. Students will have the option to sign up for a TTL Makerspace Membership and be able to make progress on their projects between classes.

A small coin purse.
(Week 2)
Using a sewing machine, students will create a small pouch with a drawstring, using thinner leather or suede. These can be embelished and decorated during the 6th week's laser class.
Sewing Machine basics will be covered as well as discussing different finishing options including Oils, Polishes, Acrylic and Wax.
A bracelet or cat/dog collar.
(Week 3 and 4)
Taking a peice of unfinished leather, students will..
Learn to cut a strip of thick leather.
Edge and Saddle Stitch the strip.
Dye and Finish the leather.
Mount a buckle and other fastening hardware, including rivets, grommets and/or snaps.
Students will be able to use the
lasers to personalize their projects.
A holster or sheath
(Week 5 and 6)
Do you have a flashlight or penknife you would like to be able to carry on your belt? Students will learn to use the laser cutter to create a custom sheath or case for a small item.
Students will learn how to use a 2 part mold and how such a mold is made using the makerspace's CNC Router
The first week students will create and use the mold.
Students will then use a Laser Cutter/Engraver to cut out the sheath and stitch holes.
Students will be able to use the lasers to personalize their projects. Laser cutters are a wonderful way of quickly cutting or embelishing a leather project including all the holes you would need to otherwise need to punch by hand.
Students can use the remaining class time to finish and decorate and finish the previous projects.
