Description
Since 1 April 2024 new legislation, the Carer’s Leave Act, gives every employee in the UK the right to 1 week of unpaid leave to care for relatives or dependents.
This law will help carers balance their caring role with work and may help organisations retain staff. But implementing the policies to support the act brings challenges.
Is your organisation prepared? Have your HR teams and managers thought about how this will work in practice for your unique workforce? Do you know how many carers are working in your organisation and if they are concentrated in certain parts of the business? Do all of your managers understand the rights that their team members will have and the notice periods required to book the leave? Have you got an easy process for administering and keeping track of the leave?
This half day, interactive online workshop will give you a practical, step-by-step plan to follow to make sure that you are fully compliant with the new law from day one.
It will help you avoid overly complicated administration, lack of clarity about who is a carer and when this type of leave applies, as well as the possibility of disruption to small teams with more than one person who has caring responsibilities.
We’ll cover:
What are the main requirements of the legislation?
Who is eligible for carer’s leave – what types of employment contracts might exclude people from this right?
Do you employ many carers? How can you find out?
What is meant by long term care and how does it differ from other types of caring responsibilities?
The best ways to communicate this new right to staff and managers
How to make sure managers act with compassion, discretion and sensitivity
Self-certification best practice – how to keep things simple and clear
Avoiding operational and legal risks such as excessive administration in tracking the leave, lack of clarity about notice requirements, managing teams that might have several carers, making sure employees are using the correct type of leave for the situation, and any actual or perceived unfairness
