Sometimes you just have to laugh, even when life is a dumpster fire. With We Are Never Meeting in Real Life., “bitches gotta eat” blogger and comedian Samantha Irby turns the serio-comic essay into an art form. Whether talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making “adult” budgets, explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette—she’s “35-ish, but could easily pass for 60-something”—detailing a disastrous pilgrimage-slash-romantic-vacation to Nashville to scatter her estranged father’s ashes, sharing awkward sexual encounters, or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now suburban moms—hang in there for the Costco loot—she’s as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths.
Irby will be in conversation with Crissle West. Crissle is a podcaster, writer, and TV/radio personality, the female co-host of hit comedy podcast The Read, and her regular television appearances include MTV2's Uncommon Sense and Comedy Central's Drunk History. She once Face-Timed with Lin-Manuel Miranda and cannot shut up about it, and she considers being featured on Beyoncé’s Facebook page to be her greatest achievement. Find her at crissle.com.

“Reading Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting In Real Life cracked my heart all the way open. The essays in this outstanding collection are full of her signature humor, wit, and charming self-deprecation but there is so much more to her writing. For every laugh, there is a bittersweet moment that could make you cry. From black women and mental health to the legacies created by poverty to dating while living in an all too human body, Irby lays bare the beautiful, uncompromising truths of her life. I cannot remember the last time I was so moved by a book. We Are Never Meeting in Real Life is as close to perfect as an essay collection can get.” —Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author of Difficult Women and Bad Feminist
"Sometimes Samantha Irby’s writing will make you want to hug her. Sometimes it will make you want to be hugged by her. Sometimes it will make you want to lock her in your closet so you might take credit for this hysterical, honest and authentic book. The last one might just be me.” –Jenny Lawson, “The Bloggess” and New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy and Let’s Pretend This Never Happened
“Meaty author and Bitches Gotta Eat blogger Samantha Irby has been making her fans cry with laughter (and occasional sadness) for years. Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is a social enterprise and event venue that raises money to support lifesaving services for people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City, and its political advocacy work is to end AIDS as an epidemic in New York State by 2020, in the United States by 2025, and worldwide by 2030. The organization uses great books, great drinks, and great creative programs to make sure all New Yorkers get adequate healthcare, including housing, regardless of their income, HIV status, gender, sexuality, or race.
When you purchase a ticket to this event, a portion of the proceeds goes to the lifesaving services provided by Housing Works, Inc., which this year is working to secure primary care, inpatient treatment, and casework for Housing Works' clients who are most at-risk by the potential repeal of ACA, in addition to supporting the legal advocacy that the organization leads on this front.
