Bassist/composer/singer Bryan Doherty brings his critically-acclaimed band Hood Smoke to Sleeping Village for the official record release show for their latest album, Cannonball Porch (Ears & Eyes Records).
Bridging genres and generations with original music steeped in the history of its influences, Hood Smoke’s sonic narrative illustrates timeless stories using beautifully simple melodies set to a rhythmic foundation built firmly from the bass up. Led by Doherty, the Chicago Sun-Times declared Hood Smoke a “must-see act” and Newcity described the band as “whip-smart jazz-funk-fusion” whose “lyrics are top-notch throughout”. Their latest album Cannonball Porch showcases Doherty’s vulnerable and melancholic voice on what he promises to be “the most simplistic, lyrically creative, and to the point” Hood Smoke album to date.
Josefina Asconapé is a Buenos Aires-born singer-songwriter, now based in Chicago. Her lush vocals pair with alt-country production chock full of piano, B-Bender, pedal steel, and 12-string guitar in a way that would have found an easy home on Asylum Records, circa 1970s. But this isn’t a throwback to Joni or Emmylou; this is a modern girl making modern music with a little twang and an infectious lightness of being.
