Join us to hunt for mushrooms and learn about this incredible fungi. Mushrooms can be found throughout Florida's woodlands and serve special functions in our ecosystems and forests. The visible mushrooms are the fruit of an intricate underground network that communicates between the fungi, trees and ecosystem like a nature internet.
This workshop is the follow-up to the earlier June 12 indoor program or can be considered as a separate program to learn how to find and identify mushrooms. NOTE: Picking of mushrooms at the Trout Lake Nature Center is only allowed during our education programs. Ordinarily, no mushroom harvesting is allowed.
Jon Martin aka Fungi Jon is a mycologist, teacher and photographer from Central Florida passionate about wild mushrooms. Through relatable, practical, and witty ways of instructing, he inspires others to dive into the world of mycology and explore nature intentionally.
Dress to walk throughout the property and go off-trail. Close-toed shoes and long pants are recommended. Mushrooms like warm and moist conditions but so do mosquitoes. You might want to bring bug spray or sun screen. Often a small basket is used to collect mushroom samples and a hand lens is also helpful to see details of the different species found.
