Description
Another Southern Ontario winter is headed our way, and one of the best ways to keep warm summer festival thoughts strong is through a brand-new season of great live music from Mariposa in Concert (MIC).
“Our first Mariposa concert of the new season kicks off with three great performers in the festival’s famous workshop format,” said MIC’s Artistic Director Robert Rountree.
The Doozies, Rick Fines and James Gray all take to the stage at St. Paul’s Centre, 62 Peter Street North in downtown Orillia on Saturday, Oct. 26. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door.
The Doozies
An eclectic trio, The Doozies have harvested their musical influences from across umpteen genres and artists, but it’s clear that traditional music is in their hearts and knits them together as a band. From 1950s malt shop rock and roll, to East Coast kitchen party jigs, they perform it all with aplomb.
The Doozies are Canadiana. This all-string trio of guitar, stand-up bass and fiddle (or mandolin) cites a traditional sound which they are quick to question, bend or flip. Fostered through different but connected avenues of the proven hot bed of the Oshawa music scene, the trio know the importance of community, both performing within it and writing about it.
At their core, The Doozies play music for the same reason people come out to see it. To connect with one another in a space where you can let loose, and have drink, a hug and a laugh.
Rick Fines
Steeped in roots music, Rick Fines crafts a unique blend of warm-hearted blues, juke joint folk, and dockside soul. As a veteran of the North American blues and folk circuits, he has performed everywhere from the Governor General’s Garden Party to Montreal Jazz, Ottawa BluesFest, the Edmonton Folk Festival and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. International tours include France, Italy, Scotland, Newfoundland, BC’s Gulf Islands, and the Northern Arctic.
Rick’s storied career has brought Juno and Handy award nominations, a Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year Award, two more Maple Blues Awards (for Solo Act of the Year), as well as an astonishing eight other nominations. His songwriting chops won him a 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with BB King as one of the judges.
James Gray
Singer-songwriter James Gray is from Muskoka who writes poignant songs about experiences with everyday life.
For the past few years James has been touring Canada, Western Europe and Australia, gaining new fans at every stop along the way. While on tour James has been promoting his albums Home to Me & Bigger Things and is currently working on a third release.
Most notably, James was the musical guest at the TED talks held on the west coast of Canada, and most recently his songs have received countless airplay on CBC Canadian Radio programs including CBC’s “Ontario Morning” with Wei Chen.
