Manitobah Mukluks Storyboot School: Introduction to Beading with Sage PetahtegoosePresented by JanSport
In this Mastercraft workshop, participants will learn the art of beading with Anishinaabekwe artist and Storyboot School instructor Sage Petahtegoose. Participants will learn how to make their very own beaded piece of art in their personal style which can be completed as a keychain, small medallion, or pair of earrings. While Petahtegoose teaches techniques, she will share her stories and share samples of her work, revealing many creative possibilities and inspirations. At the workshop’s end, participants will walk away a beautiful piece of jewelry or keychain to wear with pride! All basic materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring any materials or special items you would like to add.
About the Storyboot School
The Storyboot School program is rooted in cultural understanding and facilitates craftsmanship, creativity, and achievement. By connecting participants with Elders and Indigenous artisans to learn the traditional art of mukluk and moccasin-making, the program helps to bridge generational and cultural gaps while ensuring the traditional knowledge and teachings remain vibrant and present in modern society.
Founded in 2013, the Storyboot School is a national charitable organization that aims to inspire future generations of Canadians in the spirit of reconciliation. The school is committed to the strengthening the Indigenous community by encouraging cultural ties, preserving traditional knowledge, and fostering skill development. Our belief is that by building the confidence of program participants in these ways we are empowering individuals to achieve and encourage excellence within their communities.
Sage Petahtegoose
Sage Petahtegoose is Anishnaabekwe and Elk clan from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, a reserve in Robinson Huron Treaty Territory. She is currently based in Toronto for school and work. Sage has learned her traditional craft-making from her grandmother and her mother, as well as taking on their beadwork, leatherwork, and sewing styles. Sage loves connecting with other young people through teaching and learning, and hopes that in through her work with Manitobah Mukluks she will encourage others to walk in their culture with respect and pride.
Snacks will be provided and refreshments are generously donated by Lost Craft Beer and Arterra Wines.
