Ela Osterberger - Director of Data Science at Deliveroo
Summary: “She is great, but she needs to work on her confidence”. Why is the pronoun too often she? Ela will talk about confidence, if it’s a gender issue and explores if confidence is a must-have to be successful.
Bio: Ela heads up the Data Science team at Deliveroo that works on the Delivery algorithms, Consumer care, and Rider pricing. Prior to exploring data on pizza and finding the fastest route from A to B on a bike, she ran a data team at the Guardian. Outside of work, Ela enjoys baking (and eating) cakes, encouraging her baby to say ‘Mama’, and train rides. She is passionate about developing Data Scientists and optimising happiness at work.
Sonya Barlow - Women of Colour in Tech
Summary: As different personalities in the workplace we are often told to leave our mood at home and come to work in the most professional manner. With over 47% of millenials having a side hustle, less than 15% of females in technology and the average pay gap being 18% in a data role, its time to discuss the truth about inclusivity, culture and what we need to start doing to change the status quo and make data more diverse, different and daring! How can we leave our moods at home when the data shows it just isn't as fair?
Bio: Sonya Barlow is the Founder of diversity initiative Like Minded Females, a women of colour in technology and public speaker. She has won numerous awards including Rising star UK 2017, UK Tech business women finalist sponsored by PWC 2018 and Pitch superwomen 100 2019. Her passion areas include cultural change, diversity & Inclusion and confidence building.
Kat James - Head of Data Science at Royal Mail
Summary: Who to hire, how to hire, when to hire. In this lightning talk, I will take you through the many lessons I have learnt through growing data science teams and will share the reasons behind my passionate belief that in data science the only way to build a successful team is to build a diverse team.
Bio: Kat is the Head of Data Science at Royal Mail where she leads a team who work on all sorts of interesting problems, from route optimisation to computer vision. She is passionate about diversity in Data Science and acts as a career mentor for several early stage Data Scientists.
