Description
Join the Data Science Festival Manchester in partnership with N Brown Group for our February Manchester Meetup! This evening will include 4 super interesting talks.
Due to the popularity of Data Science Festival events, we are now allocating event tickets via a random ballot. Registering here enters you into the ticket ballot for the Data Science Festival Event on February 18th 2020, the ballot will be drawn on the 14th February 2020. Those randomly selected will then be e-mailed a Universe ticket for the event.
If you get an allocated Universe ticket, please bring a copy of your paper ticket or your ticket on your phone to the event to check in with your QR code. Tickets are non-transferable.
PLEASE NOTE REGISTERING ON MEETUP DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU ENTRY TO THIS EVENT.

Ian Williams & Zhanna Mileeva -Driving profit through the use of Customer Lifetime Value
Summary: Who are our most profitable customers and what do they look like? Who will go on to be our best customers in the future? What should we do with that knowledge? These are some of the big questions faced by N Brown as they continue to grow within the ecommerce market. Join Ian and Zhanna who will describe some of the work N Brown has done in the last 12 months with Customer Lifetime Value. They will give an overview of the steps taken in analysing the data, building and assessing multiple predictive models and where implementing this work has driven positive business impact.
Bio: Ian has over 17 years of experience within data science and analytics in the retail industry. In his career to date, he has worked across most areas of retail analytics including targeted marketing, digital analytics, econometrics, personalisation and experimentation. Ian has spent the last year focused on driving profit through marketing optimisation (digital and paper), retail forecasting and learning about working in the cloud.
Bio: Zhanna received a PhD in Physics and has over 10 years' experience in Material Science, Research and Development, bringing innovative solutions to multi-disciplinary academic and industrial projects. In pursuit of her passion for Advanced Analytics and Visualization, Zhanna dived into the world of Data Science. Being a part of N Brown Group's Data Division, she is currently focused on increasing business profitability.
Andrew Alvin - Optimising What We Optimise With XGBoost
Summary: Often, we are forced to optimise for the thing that's easy rather than the thing we want. In the first half of this talk, we'll see that using the wrong objective function can sometimes lead to unexpected, expensive, or disastrous consequences. In the second half, I’ll share a painless method of avoiding this in XGBoost.
Bio: Andrew has worked as a data scientist at N Brown for two years, previously coming from a background in physics and data science.
Jane Baxter - Image Recognition in Retail
Summary: How can we teach a model to distinguish between a jacket or a dress? How can we teach it to find us a similar shirt to what our friend is wearing? In this talk, we’ll discuss the many applications of image recognition at an online retailer, how convolutional layers in a neural network function (briefly!) and share some results from working with a real life, messy dataset.
Bio: I’m currently a Data Scientist at N Brown after a somewhat non-traditional path into Data Science - I first started in biology! I completed my undergraduate studies at Cambridge and spent a few years geeking out over genomics and cell dynamics. Following that I jumped into the corporate world of management consultancy working on a range of projects and I loved working in the nitty gritty bits of data. Last year, I completed my MSc Data Science at Lancaster University and worked on a dissertation collaborating with N Brown to build a visual search tool. Since then I’ve been working there full time on a range of projects, helping to drive value for the business!
Mary Guettel & Charlie Roadnight - Data Science - from craft to production
Summary: Automated image tagging and recognition, automated chatbots, predicting the best clothing size for a customer, making real-time data driven decisions on our websites, using 3D body scans to understand our customers, smarter search engines…. In this talk we will explain why we need a Data Platform fit for the future to turn our 'sexy' data science dreams into products the business will benefit from. We will highlight some of the challenges we have faced and most importantly how to leverage our tools to deploy data science products at scale.
Bio: Mary Guettel: After obtaining my PhD in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing from The University of Manchester, I have held a number of positions across the full spectrum of analytics and data science. I have great passion for creating end-to-end Data Science products and I am currently leading the Machine Learning Engineering function at N Brown. One of my high priorities is creating a buzzing Data community at N Brown - we are on a journey of democratising data and embedding a truly data-first mindset throughout the entire organisation.
Bio: Charlie Roadnight: After studying Mathematics at university, I have wandered through the realm of Data Science and discovered my passion is in data engineering. Having previously worked in consultancy delivering a number of projects across a variety of sectors, I have developed a good understanding of what it takes to go from model conception to model deployment, and am enjoying building on my skills at N Brown and harnessing the power of the data which N Brown possesses.
