Join Data Science Festival - Dublin in partnership with Geological Survey Ireland in July for two great speakers. Shane Carey - Geographic Information Systems Specialist at Geological Survey Ireland and Dr Ted McCormack - Project Lead on the Groundwater Flood Programme at Geological Survey Ireland.
Due to the popularity of Data Science Festival events, we are now allocating event tickets via a random ballot. Registering here enters you into the ticket ballot for the Data Science Festival Event at Geological Survey Ireland on July 23rd 2019, the ballot will be drawn on the 19th July. Those randomly selected will then be e-mailed a Universe ticket for the event, with the joining details.
If you get an allocated Universe ticket, please bring a copy of your paper ticket or your ticket on your phone to the event to check in with your QR code. Tickets are non-transferable.

Shane Carey - “Geo” Data Science – data collection, analyses, processing and visualisation from a geological perspective.
Summary: Have you ever wondered how high resolution 3D maps are created or why the need to collect this type of data? The first half of this talk conveys how this type of data is collected, processed, visualised and utilised from a geological perspective. The second half of the talk dives into data analytics and how to bring groundwater hydrochemical data to life through the use of the JavaScript library – d3.js.
Bio: Shane Carey is a GIS specialist with 10 years of experience in the management, analyses and visualisation of spatial datasets. He has a passion for Open Source technologies, especially those related to the spatial industry.
Dr Ted McCormack - Developing a National Groundwater Flood Map using Sentinel-1 Satellite Imagery
Summary: In recent years, a series of unprecedented flood events have highlighted the need for improved mapping methodologies for groundwater flooding in Ireland. This talk explores processing Copernicus and sentinel-1 satellite data with Python to automate the construction of flood hydrographs. This automation enables the estimation of probabilistic flood mapping which will contribute to the revised national groundwater flood being developed.
Bio: Dr. Ted McCormack is a Chartered Engineer appointed as project lead on the Groundwater Flood Programme in the Geological Survey Ireland. A specialist in the and hydrogeology of karst regions, Ted works alongside the OPW and local authorities to monitor, model and map groundwater flooding in Ireland using both traditional techniques and remote sensing methods.
