Carlo Gentile, was a Neapolitan adventurer who arrived in Victoria in 1862. Taking up commercial photography he is best known for his images of the Cariboo Gold Rush. On Vancouver Island he photographed Leech Town, the Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo and the Alberni Valley as well as many mainland locations. He was also one of the first individuals to extensively photograph First Nations people. Ronald A. Greene, author of "Carlo Gentile, Gold Rush Photographer, 1863-1866" will present an illustrated lecture on the life and work of Carlo Gentile at the Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum on Thursday April 19th at 7:30 pm.
