What career opportunities are there in the sustainable energy industry?
We’ve invited industry insiders to talk about the organizations they work for, how they got there, and their views on potential career paths in the renewables arena.
If you are wondering what a career in sustainable energy could look like; where the sector is growing or shrinking; what the different potential roles along the value chain are; or anything in between, you will get a chance to hear from insiders and ask your burning questions. Our guest speakers will share their personal experiences and perspectives on career opportunities that may be right for you.

Speakers:
Shivani Chotalia, Senior Energy Storage Analyst, NRStor Inc.
As Senior Analyst of Engineering and Projects at NRStor, Shivani works to build, own and operate first-of-a-kind energy storage projects, including Canada’s first commercial flywheel energy storage facility and the first fuel-free compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility in the world. Shivani plays a lead role in working with remote, off-grid Indigenous communities to build partnerships and projects reducing dependence on diesel fuel while supporting local economic growth.
Prior to NRStor, Shivani worked to develop biogas projects in Ontario and California and discovered her passion for cleantech while working at a plastics recycling startup. Shivani also has experience working in finance as an investment banking analyst in Calgary, and in R&D doing polymer engineering research in China. Shivani completed a dual degree in Green Process Engineering and Business Administration from Western University. In 2015, she was selected as a Venture for Canada Fellow – one of the top 30 recent grads in Canada showing an aptitude for entrepreneurship and leadership.
Mary Warner, Manager of Finance and Administration, TREC
TREC is a leader in the development of community owned renewable energy. Mary oversees the administrative staff in the office as well as working with the Executive Assistant to manage the HR for TREC. She works with managers/Executive Directors/Boards for each organization starting with developing budgets and budget templates, full cycle bookkeeping and AR/AP management, reporting to budget including variance analysis and extensive notes, and year end/audit preparation for each organization.
Mary has a BA in Sociology and Global Studies from Laurier and from there she studied International Project Management post-grad program at Humber College where she discovered interest in bookkeeping, budgeting and financial reporting. She was hired at TREC in 2009 to work as a part time Office Administrator, working 3 days a week to do basic bookkeeping, simple financial reporting to 2 board and assist with the office management for a team of 6 people renting desks in a much larger office. Since 2009 TREC has grown, their projects have been developed into full independent organizations and as each has grown she has been able to grow with the organization.
Paul Frith, Director of Advocacy & Sales, Geosource Energy Inc.
In his current role with Geosource Energy Inc. he spends much of his time working with the development and engineering community of Southern Ontario introducing geothermal heating and cooling technology to their projects.He also is very active from a government relations perspective, representing the geothermal industry through the Ontario Geothermal Association.He works with many government ministries on both the political and bureaucratic side.
Paul is also very active in the nonprofit world.He works with the Canada Green Building Council Toronto Chapter, as he Chairs their annual Drive for Change golf tournament and helps with Fundraising Efforts and was named their volunteer of the year in 2017.He is also a founding member of the BEIC (Building Energy Innovators Council) and chairs their membership committee.He also on the Advisory Board of the Future Cities Summit and Initiative.
Paul was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario and is a graduate of Recreation Management from Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario.He has been surrounded by politics his entire life, as many of his family members have been in politics on a municipal and federal level.He is a proud father of a 6-year-old daughter, and he and his wife Donna live in Burlington, Ontario.
Gary Thompson, Supervisor- Enginnering, Generation Planning & System Studies, Toronto Hydro
An electrical engineer, Gary has over 25 years' experience working with utilities and industry. Currently at Toronto Hydro, as Lead, Generation Planning and System Studies, Gary heads a team that plans and enables the connection of electricity generation including energy storage, renewal generation and large industrial infrastructure. He is prime on the company's energy storage projects. As an Educator, Gary has developed and taught courses in Power Systems, Electric Machines, Renewable Energy and Business at various academic institutions. Gary brings his significant experience in the area of Board Governance and Operations. He has serve on various Boards and Committees within the areas of education, municipal government, law enforcement and social services. He is currently a Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Urban Energy, Faculty of Engineering, Ryerson University.
