Description
In June 2O16, the number of refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced persons surpassed 65m people globally. In this session we will examine how the refugee crisis meets film, via discussion of two very different projects.
117,OOO refugees and migrants made the dangerous crossing from the Horn of Africa to Yemen last year, despite the country’s worsening conflict and growing displacement. With smugglers still persuading people to make the crossing, UNHCR, facilitated by IEFTA, have launched a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of this journey. The music video ‘Dangerous Crossings’ spans five languages and was created in collaboration with prominent artists from across the Horn of Africa.
In 2O15, Exodus gave cameras to some of the people who smuggled themselves into Europe, to record where no-one else can go. Director Jack MacInnes will discuss that process and the resulting intimate, horrifying and epic portrait of the migration crisis.
Speakers: Marco Orsini (IEFTA), Jack MacInnes (Director/Producer, 'Exodus: Our Journey to Europe'), Ragnhild Ek (UNHCR)
Moderator: Brian Woods (True Vision)
