Description
Designed by multi-award winning architectural studio Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt), Bunjil Place is the City of Casey’s new $125 million cultural and entertainment precinct for Melbourne’s South East. The overarching vision for the precinct is “to create an inviting central heart for the community that celebrates participation, belonging and pride”. fjmt describes the precinct – which includes a major library, gallery, multipurpose studio space, 800-seat theatre, civic offices, and outdoor plaza – as “an example of a new form of community and civic building. It is not a single use or single facility that tends to divide and separate a community by interest, education or culture, but an inclusive hybrid form of public building, reflecting and embracing our diversity”. The design takes inspiration from Bunjil – the ‘creator spirit’ of Casey’s First Nations people – who takes the form of an eagle in the dreaming. The dreaming stories pass on important knowledge, cultural values and belief systems to later generations that merge traditions and practise responsibilities for looking after country. The construction of the building involved intricate challenges, particularly around the building’s dominant feature, the timber gridshell which is framed by a 12-metre-high glass façade.
