Description
Last July a wildfire in the Blue Creek area burned over 6,000 acres of grass, brush and timber, threatening the Mill Creek Watershed, many homes and cabins, with the loss of one family's dwelling. The fire left a sizable black mark on the viewshed of our valley. Come take a closer look at the fire nearly one year after the event, comparing it to pictures taken last fall. Examine the effects on the vegetation and observe how Nature works to heal itself.Carrie Spradlin, Silviculturist, Umatilla National Forest Service, will share her knowledge of post-fire regeneration and evaluate the health of the area. Bret Thomas, Fire Management Officer from the Walla Walla District of the Umatilla National Forest, will discuss fighting wildfires and identify the challenges faced in the Blue Creek fire.We will meet in the parking lot at the Walla Walla Community College and carpool to Klicker Mountain Road to a vantage point of the area. Please bring water and a lunch. The area is bare and rocky, so consider bringing a folding chair or cushion. We plan to repeat this event annually to track the progress of the area's regeneration.
