Description
It all started from observing seagulls drinking from polluted water full of cigarette butts which contain many different chemicals. The birds would even build their nest with them exposing their babies to toxic substances from the beginning of their lives. Negweny is from Luxembourg. As a film actor, I wanted to tell this story.
In grand storyteller’s fashion, I promptly decided to collect cigarette ends in Blackpool Tower in order to create some art and established a gallery at 100 Central Drive FY15QF in order to tell this sad story.
A report about my work on the BBC:
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-england-lancashire-48824553/cigarette-butts-blackpool-man-makes-artwork-from-discarded-ends
From around 30.000 discarded cigarette ends, a series of artistic creations came to be and were offered as a gift to the municipality for the celebration of Blackpool Tower’s 125th anniversary and supporting Mr. Turner’s Lancashire Free Tobacco 2023 project.
On 27th September 2019, starting at 6.30pm, the Blackpool Circus Room (capacity of +1.300) will be hosting the opening event of my Seagull Freedom Gallery / Cigarette Waste Art Gallery and Educational Center (go to the Facebook pages). Shortly after, the whole audience will move to the gallery on 100 Central Drive (7 minute-walk) for the official opening of the art space including the work ‘Blackpool Tower Speaking’ already documented by the BBC as the largest of its kind with a size of 2x1.4m and containing 30.000 cigarette butts.
The gallery also includes a cinema for screenings of short films and sensibilisation campaign about littering and smoking hazards and Smokerlyzer, a Bedfond Scientific Ltd. creation to monitor carbon monoxide (CO) in smokers’ breath and help smoking cessation. A souvenir shop will also be available for those who are into supporting the project by buying some merchandising.
From 8.30pm, everybody will be invited to go back to Blackpool Tower for a screening of Sawah, my latest film, an international and already awarded feature film emerging from a partnership between Egypt and Luxembourg among other countries and that was written and directed by my son, Adolf El Assal and featuring well-known Egyptian actor Karim Kassim.
