Description
In keeping with our mission to ensure that in 2019 every single one of us is living our very best lives; Black Girls Book Club is very proud to present a new series of events titled the 'Summer Soiree..
‘Summer Soiree’ is an opportunity for your girls to ensure that this summer we are all living our very best lives even if we are on hiatus! We will be introducing you to exclusive and unique opportunities, meet-ups, brunches, book clubs and a whole lot more. But this summer we are keeping it very intimate but just as fancy.
As the good sis Megan told us - its a Hot Girl Summer - so what better way to celebrate than with our Summer Soiree Season. Summer Soiree's will be events rooted in Caribbean culture - whether that be through food, drinks, books, music or the author themselves.
First up we have Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff and her book Mother Country:
MOTHER COUNTRY IS…
A leading new exploration of the Windrush generation featuring David Lammy, Lenny Henry, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sharmaine Lovegrove, Hannah Lowe, Jamz Supernova, Natasha Gordon and Rikki Beadle-Blair.
For the pioneers of the Windrush generation, Britain was 'the Mother Country'. They made the long journey across the sea, expecting to find a place where they would be be welcomed with open arms; a land in which you were free to build a new life, eight thousand miles away from home.
This remarkable book explores the reality of their experiences, and those of their children and grandchildren, through 22 unique real-life stories spanning more than 70 years.
"The story of Windrush, is, like any other, a story of humanity. Of life, love, struggle, hope, misery, success and failure. It's one that is too often neglected in our media ... but this volume acts as a remedy to that failure of story-telling, which I ask you to both savour and share."

With a nightly combination of Rum and Roti from Marie Mitchell and Joseph Pilgrim, alongside a curated events programme, Island Social Club aims to fill the void left by the erosion of London’s once thriving Caribbean social scene.
