Join us for a work-in-process showing of Away, You Ethiop! by 2022/23 BRIClab Performing Arts resident David Samuel.
"So... you achieved the American Dream. Was it worth it?" In "Away, You Ethiop!," actor/artist David Samuel uses film, music, and theater to explore that question in this mythically autobiographical show about his family's journey to and through the American Dream.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
David Samuel (he/him/his) is a first generation Ethiopian-American, born in Texas and raised in Maryland. He is also an actor, musician, writer, and producer. As an actor, he has performed around the U.S. and Canada in musicals, new plays, and Off-Broadway in Shakespeare. His documentary, Niguse and The Red Terror, was screened at the 2021 Harlem International Film Festival. As part of the documentary release, he curated and designed a photo journal, and designed a line of apparel, through his production company, Third World Vision. As KINGOFAXUM, he has written, produced, recorded, and released three EPs and 11 singles and produced and directed two music videos. He received his MFA in Acting from Brown University/Trinity Rep. He was an Allen Lee Hughes Fellow in Artistic Development at Arena Stage. ABOUT BRICLAB: PERFORMING ARTS
BRIClab: Performing Arts is a commissioning and residency development program for emerging and established local artists to explore and expand the possibilities of their work in music, dance, theater and multi-disciplinary performance. Free exploration and rigorous commitment to process, with the support of the staff and resources that BRIC offers, are at the heart of the BRIClab program. Artists receive stipends and an exclusive 12-day intensive residency in the multi-purpose Artist Studio with development time, artistic mentoring, and work-in-process performances.
Venue Information:
BRIC House is Brooklyn’s cultural living room: a 40,000 square foot multi-disciplinary arts and media complex in the former Strand Theatre, where emerging and established artists can create work that deepens their practice and engages the diverse communities of the borough.
Beginning Nov. 1, 2022, attendees of any BRIC House programming will no longer have to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter the building.
