AS220 is extremely excited to announce the return of FOO FEST, our annual summer block party all-ages fundraiser, to Empire Street in downtown Providence on Saturday, August 18th, 2018!
From 1 PM to 1 AM, outside on Empire Street and inside AS220, people of all ages will delight in 12 incredible hours of music, art, performance, kid and family-friendly activities, hands-on interactive art experiences from local artists, makers, and like-minded arts and cultural organizations, delectable food and drink, and much more, all highlighting arts, culture, and creativity in Providence and the Ocean State! While we're now announcing the musical lineup and some of the all-ages activities, rest assured that we will be making more announcements throughout the summer about FOO FEST 2018!Get advance tickets now for $10, $15 at the gate on the day of, or.....$25 (also online)!
Why a $25 ticket? 2018 marks 25 years since AS220 opened our Empire Street complex. No other single building in downtown Providence contains as much varied and dynamic arts and cultural programming, with programs spanning music and performance, theatre, dance, visual art, youth arts education and affordable housing. However, this humble building requires long overdue upgrades, and AS220’s programming needs sustainable support to continue meeting the needs of Rhode Island’s creative community. We have now embarked on a $5 million dollar ALL ACCESS fundraising campaign to make comprehensive improvements to the building's entire ecosystem - you can read about that here: as220.org/campaign. With your purchase of a $25 ticket in advance, you'll not only be supporting out regular yearly Foo Fest fundraiser - you'll be supporting our ALL ACCESS campaign for Empire Street too!
Kids 10 & under are FREE, as always! Not a kid? Foo Fest is powered by volunteers, and anyone who signs up for a 3-hour volunteer shift at foofest.as220.org receives FREE ADMISSION to the entirety of Foo Fest, plus a free shift drink and official volunteer patch!
2018 FOO FEST CO-HEADLINERS:
Rah Digga (born Rashia Fisher) is an American rapper, model and actress. The Jersey native is well known as a longtime member of the Flipmode Squad, a Hip Hop group led by Busta Rhymes. She parted ways amicably with the group in 2007 and continued to have a prosperous solo career. She has been called “one of rap’s most prominent women MCs” by Allmusic and has been deemed “one of Hip Hop’s most skilled female MCs” in the book How to Rap. You can catch Rah Digga on the weekly podcast she hosts with Lord Jamar titled the “Yanadameen Godcast”.
In 1975, the Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled to be the Crosby Stills Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in London, Paris, Manchester, New York and Minneapolis. Pere Ubu was changing the face of rock music. Over the next four decades they defined the art of cult; refined the voice of the outsider; and inspired the likes of Joy Division, Pixies, Husker Du, Henry Rollins, REM, Sisters of Mercy, Thomas Dolby, Bauhaus, Julian Cope and countless others. With all their past material recently reissued, Pere Ubu are one of the few bands of that era still consistently producing new material that captures the attention of music critics worldwide.
