What is Mash Bill #2? A Mash Bill is the grain recipe for whiskey. For it to be bourbon, the mash bill must consist of at least 51% Corn, the rest is usually made up of some variation of Malted Barley, Wheat and Rye. Within the Buffalo Trace Distillery there exists Two (2) Primary Mash Bills, Mash Bill #1 & Mash Bill #2. We are going to explore Mash Bill #2, because this is an area of high interest to most.
What makes Mash Bill #2 so interesting? Mostly it has to do with the proprietary information surrounding these brands and the fact that Buffalo Trace, through its parent company Sazerac Co, does not actually own these brands or the distribution of these brands, they just distill the product. Mash Bill #2 is considered the High Rye mash bill, as it is believed to be between 10-15% Rye, 5% Malted Barley, and the rest Corn. This differs from Mash Bill #1, which is believed to be less than 10% Rye, 5% Malted Barley, and the rest Corn. The other reason is brands like Elmer T Lee, Rock Hill Farms, and Blanton's are elusive and hard to find and revered by connoisseurs within the bourbon community.
What releases make up Mash Bill #2? Ancient Age, Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star, Elmer T Lee, Hancock's President's Reserve, Rock Hill Farms, Blanton's Green, Blanton's Single Barrel, Blanton's Straight From The Barrel, and Blanton's Gold. Interestingly, within the Blanton's lineup the only one that can be purchased in the US is Blanton's Single Barrel. The rest are all distributed overseas, primarily in Europe and Japan.
All Tickets include pours from the following Bourbons & Four Course meal that has been paired to flavors found within the Current Mash Bill #2 lineup.
