TAWAHUM BIGE is a Łutselkʼe Dene, Plains Cree poet and spoken word artist from unceded Musqueam, Squamish & Tsleil-waututh Territory (Vancouver). Their Scorpio-moon-ass poems and music expose growth, resistance & persistence as a hopeless Two Spirit Nonbinary sadboy on occupied Turtle Island. With a BA in Creative Writing from KPU, Tawahum has performed at countless festivals with poems featured in numerous publications. His land protection work versus Trans Mountain pipeline expansion had him face incarceration in 2020. Tawahum’s debut collection of poetry is set for Spring 2022, published by Nightwood Editions and their debut EP is set to release for the same time. Find him online @Tawahum on Instagram, twitter and more.
MATT STERN is an award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter who is known for his uniquely uplifting spirit, soothing voice, and for promoting diversity, radical acceptance, and community connection. He sings in English, French, Spanish and Japanese and his music has been featured on CBC, Radio-Canada, Queerty.com, Victoria Buzz, Mtl Blog and Exclaim! while his original music videos have garnered awards at the LA Film Awards, Victoria Film Festival and KASHISH Film Festival in Mumbai. He has been a featured performer at POP Montreal, Canadian Music Week, Campbell Bay Music Festival, Coup de cœur francophone, Enoshima Music Festival in Japan and M Comme Musique in France. His song Precious and Sacred, based on the book of the same name, was published for the Association of BC Native Friendship Centres and a feature in Addicted Magazine characterized Matt’s recent album Take It or Leave It as “beautiful music that makes you feel seen and safe.” Born in Montreal and based on Vancouver Island, he is slated to release his first full-length French album in 2021 and his next English album (of songs created during lockdown) in early 2022.
JESSICA PICKERSGILL is a singer/songwriter and award-winning violist, born and raised in Victoria, BC. Through her rich classical music past, having received her Master of Music in Viola Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, Jessica has had the opportunity to perform for audiences at home in Canada and around the world including Italy, Russia and the US. With these classical chops as well as the passion and genuine wish to allow others to fall in love with music through her performance, has applied it all to her love of singing and songwriting, allowing her to be a part of many facets of the music scene here on the island. These include playing in the multi award-winning string ensemble Cascadia Strings, playing with the Victoria and Vancouver Symphonies, enriching the sounds of local bands like Current Swell (Rifflandia, Buffalo album 2019), and Fox Glove (Rock the Shores, Let the Love In, EP recording), as well as being the lead singer of local string ensemble/indie folk band Auburn Blind, who publicly premiered by invitation at the Wood Stove Festival in Cumberland in late 2019. Their first album is on track to be recorded this year!
Jessica and Matt met serendipitously mid-pandemic thanks to Matt’s puppy, Max. Realizing they were neighbours and both musicians, they began to collaborate and never looked back. Harmonizing through waves of bittersweet longing, playful giddiness, gentle soothing and raw connection, they weave a musical palette that invites everyone in.
