Speakers:
Jason Brenier is the VP of Strategy at Georgian Partners. Jason leads the development of Georgian’s investment thesis areas and works closely with Georgian’s portfolio companies to integrate artificial intelligence and natural language processing into messaging products and conversational interfaces. Jason also supports Georgian’s investment lifecycle and due diligence process and assists with applied research and product development efforts on the Impact team. Jason has more than 15 years of experience applying advanced analytics, computational linguistics and machine learning to business problems in the financial services, life sciences and legal domains. Prior to joining Georgian Partners, Jason held business analytics and technology leadership positions in management consulting, enterprise software and start-ups. Jason holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where his research focused on computational linguistics and speech and language processing systems. He was a visiting researcher at Stanford University and a member of the Stanford Natural Language Processing Group.
Uwe Hohgrawe is an assistant teaching professor and lead faculty in the Master’s in Professional Studies in Analytics program, which he (co-)designed. Previously, Dr. Hohgrawe was a part-time lecturer in the program and lectured at other universities in the United States and Germany. Dr. Hohgrawe is an analytics professional in the health and pharmaceutical markets, with more than 25 years of global experience in data analytics, competitive intelligence, forecasting, and market research. Most recently, he was Vice President of global business intelligence for EMD Serono. Earlier in his career, Dr. Hohgrawe led Johnson & Johnson’s global pharmaceutical market research team for nearly a decade, and also led business intelligence teams for GfK, one of the world’s largest market research organizations.
Lauren Epstein is an Associate at OMERS Ventures, where she is responsible for sourcing and executing on investment opportunities, working with portfolio companies post-investment, and engaging in relationship-building and outreach in the community. Previously, Lauren was the Director of Investments at Epstein Enterprises Inc., a Toronto-based family office, where she was responsible for growing the angel investing portfolio. Prior to that, Lauren spent several years working as a litigation lawyer at a leading Toronto commercial litigation law firm, after clerking at the Ontario Court of Appeal. Lauren holds a B.A. in Government, cum laude, from Harvard University and completed the joint JD/MBA program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the Rotman School of Management. Lauren is an Associate at the Creative Destruction Lab - Toronto, a mentor with Next 36 and the Holt Accelerator, and a member of the Advisory Committee with the U of T Hatchery Launch Lab.
Chris Dingle is the Senior Director of Data Science & Products at Rogers. He is responsible for Machine Learning and Audience Personalization for Consumer Value Management predictive models, Customer Experience view & journey, Customer Satisfaction predictive NLP & LTR (LTR – Likelihood to Recommend) and Audience Intelligence initiatives. A strategic thinker, marketing operations innovator, and leader of high performance teams, Chris joined Rogers Communications in 2013 with responsibility for the launch, strategy and operations of Audience Intelligence. By building collaborative partnerships inside and outside the company, the division generated revenues well over sales targets. These strategic relationships include SAS, Hortonworks, and Accenture for High Performance Big Data Analytics, and Google and Adobe for at scale digital audience segmentation and activation.
Aliza Lakhani is the CEO and Regional Dean of Northeastern Toronto. Northeastern University, ranked Top 40 by US News, is a leader in global and experiential education. Toronto is Northeastern’s first international campus, and part of the network of campuses across North America - other physical campuses include Silicon Valley, Seattle and Charlotte. The Toronto campus offers master’s degree programs in project management, information assurance and cybersecurity and regulatory affairs in additional to flexible, experiential and innovative programs tailored to corporate learners.
Jamie Rosenblatt is a Principal at Golden Ventures. In his role, Jamie works closely with portfolio founders, entrepreneurs, accelerators, incubators, and the broader startup community, to help find, fund and build exceptional companies. Jamie began his career as a Corporate Development Associate at O’Leary Ventures, a private early-stage investment company owned and chaired by Kevin O’Leary. He then joined Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP where he practiced corporate law with a focus on M&A and corporate finance in the technology sector. Prior to joining Golden Ventures, Jamie was the Head of Business Development for Avid Life Media. He has a JD/MBA from the University of Toronto and a BA in Philosophy from The University of Western Ontario.
Monish Gandhi is Founder & CEO of Gradient Ascent AI. He has been passionate about AI for a long time: over ten years ago he built a system that could teach players how to win at pool billiards. Today, at Gradient Ascent, he helps companies adopt AI within their products and processes to drive business results. Monish deeply values customer-centric culture and brings his curiosity, passion for problem solving, and enthusiasm for technology to customers. Gradient Ascent (GA) has helped businesses develop new products, increase efficiencies, forecast risk, and conduct legal/regulatory compliance. Prior to founding GA, Monish held product management, professional services, technical management, and sales roles at a number of high-growth technology companies. He has a masters degree in Finance and Financial Law (University of London) and an undergraduate degree in Systems Design Engineering (with Dean’s Honours) from University of Waterloo.
Megh Gupta is Director at Element AI. In his role as Director of Industry Solutions & Corporate Development at Element AI, Megh Gupta is responsible for developing the go-to-market strategy of the company along with leading its partnership and investment initiatives. Prior to joining Element AI, Megh spent four years as a venture capitalist at OMERS Ventures, Canada’s largest venture capital fund. During his tenure, he focused on developing an investment thesis around commercializing applications of AI, leading three early-stage investments, and helping to actively manage the fund’s portfolio companies. Previously, Megh spent three years in the Strategy and New Ventures team at Torstar Digital, helping to develop, launch and lead online businesses in the personal finance and mobile retail shopping sectors. He also helped manage the company’s corporate venturing initiatives and strategic planning activities. Prior to Torstar Digital, Megh worked in private equity, management consulting, and briefly dabbled in entrepreneurship in India. Megh graduated summa cum laude with an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and also received an HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He holds a CPA accounting designation.
William Yin is the Senior Venture Manager of the Blockchain Stream at the Creative Destruction Lab, an incubator for early-stage science-based ventures. During the 10 month program, companies receive mentorship from accomplished tech entrepreneurs, VCs and thought leaders in blockchain/AI, including Ted Livingston, Boris Wertz, Tony Lacavera, and others. Companies also get $100K in pre-seed funding and co-working space. Prior to CDL, Will was the founder of Scent Trunk, which used AI to create custom fragrance formulations, which was later acquired by Perfumer's Apprentice.
Scott Howard is an enterprise and startup technology deal maker. Scott partners with world-class engineers to solve complex business and technology challenges generating customer success. As co-founder, CEO of ePIC Blockchain and partner in BlockX Labs, Scott is committed to building the underlying processing power of blockchains as well as the value-creating applications. Scott believes Blockchain is a new category of technology, Trustware, the merger of hardware & software into a system of trust.
Michelle Scarborough is Managing Director, Strategic Investments and Women in Tech. In this position, she leads the origination and execution of strategic initiatives to fill current and future financing gaps in the Canadian ecosystem. She is also responsible for BDC’s $200M investment to bring capital to high-growth tech companies with women in the lead. Michelle has over 20 years of experience as an entrepreneurs and investor across various industries and sectors. Before joining BDC, she was Senior Vice President at Kensington Capital Partners Limited, where she was responsible for the growth and management of its fund of funds and direct investment activity in Western Canada including venture capital, private equity, infrastructure and energy technology investments. Previously, serving as Managing Director of the Invest Ottawa Regional Innovation Centre, she founded one of the first technology accelerators in Ontario, a model that was replicated in 13 accelerators across the province. She also structured and launched the $250M Ontario Emerging Technology Fund, and was a co-founder and Managing Partner of Fronterra Ventures—an oil and gas technology venture fund.
Before joining nobul, she was a software developer and WLM component owner of IBM DB2. Alina holds a master’s degree in computer science from The University of Western Ontario, where her research focused on high-performance computing and Truncated Fourier Transform.
