How do you work within an industry that is predominantly white when the universal mission is to end disparities for people of color? Did you know there are only 2% Black midwives? Did you know Black women are 243% more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications than white women? How do we balance motherhood and mental health while dealing with racist constructs in society? How do we work together to uphold our shared overall movement to end maternal and infant health disparities?
As birthworkers we know these racist constructs impacts maternal and infant health disparities. As a birthworker of color, how do we navigate this? As a white birthworker, how do we show up as an ally and not allow one’s own fragility to become the central focus?
Barbara Vernues, of @tinyandbrave will be leading this discussion to share how we may utilize our creativity, culture and collaboration to create equity.
