Proscenium Circus is proud to present a short play, “Act Free”, written by award-winning playwright and poet, Idris Goodwin. To honor Martin Luther King Day and inspire conversation about the Black and Brown experience in America, join the conversation of what it means to truly attain freedom as we take you back to the post-Civil War.
Professional director Benny Sato Ambush guest directed this story about the experience of Juneteenth with student actors Makena Muindi, Licia Fallah, and Maggie Fernald. “As soon as I read the script, I was hooked. The idea that a play could be written about slavery without having the slaves talk in a demeaning (albeit historically accurate) way, was unheard of for me. It was refreshing to be able to see a character that looked like me be shown in such an amazing way,” said student actor Maggie Fernald.
“In light of recent events, it's important to continue the dialogue of racism in America both past and present. I am glad we are able to use our art as a contribution to this long-overdue discussion,” says student Emma Early, a Proscenium Circus member.
This ticket is for an on-demand viewing of the programming.
