Special guests to start off the evening with music are the Evergreen Livikat, Finnish Kantele players, a community musical group whose members play Finnish stringed instruments with between 5 and 36 strings. Many In Finland consider it their unique national cultural instrument with over a 2000 year history. It belongs to the zither family of instruments and has a very pleasing celestial harp-like sound. The Seattle ensemble is linked with a Portland based performing group of the same name that is over 20 years old. They have musical relationships with culturally and historically important Finnish Kantele players in Washington State and Finland. Evergreen Livikat performs for community organizations and festivals. It is a rare occasion American audiences can hear live Finnish traditional Kantele melodies played in an ensemble!
