Description
Boomerang Bags is a community initiative; making reusable bags out of diverted textile material. As a community we provide and create an alternative for single use plastic bags. We start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable philosophy ― one community, needle and thread at a time!
Don’t know how to sew, not a problem. Many tasks are required to assemble a single bag, so there’s a job for everyone. From cutting, pinning, ironing to sewing, you can utilize skills you already had or expand and learn new ones. The best part is, we’re all working together which means each bag gets touched by so many amazing volunteers.
In our 3-hour workshop, we’ll introduce you to the Boomerang Bags initiative, share our goals and discuss the issues surrounding plastic pollution in our environment. We’ll showcase each stage of the boomerang bag productions and divide into work stations to tackle each step as a team. As the initiative is a collaborative project throughout Toronto, it embraces a pay it forward approach. Each workshop event contributes bags parts for the next group to assemble, so depending where your event falls in the line, the tasks will change accordingly. All levels of skills are welcome, fabric and equipment are provided and we encouraged those available to bring sewing machines to help along the progress.
Hosted by marine biologist, conservationist, holistic nutritionist and yoga teacher, discussions involving ocean health, marine critters and healthy living are always on the table.
