About the Speakers:
Boris Wertz is one of the top tech early-stage investors in North America and the founding partner of Version One. He is also a board partner with Andreessen Horowitz. Before becoming an investor, Boris was the Chief Operating Officer of AbeBooks.com which sold to Amazon in 2008. He was responsible for marketing, business development, product, customer service and international operations – leading a team of 60 people. This deep operational experience helps him guide other entrepreneurs to start, build and scale companies. Boris finished his PhD at the Graduate School of Management (WHU), Koblenz, majoring in Business Economics & Business Management. In 2005, he was named the Pacific Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year. Boris is passionate about science, technology, and entrepreneurship and sits on the boards of Science World and Canada Learning Code. He is also involved as a mentor with the Creative Destruction Lab in Toronto and Vancouver.
Mark Binns has over 20 years of experience building customer-driven sales and marketing strategies. Mark has founded, built, and sold two consulting companies that provided strategic advice on customer acquisition and revenue growth to Fortune 1000 technology companies including RIM, Cisco and Rogers. Mark has also scaled two SAAS based software businesses in the B2C and B2B spaces into leaders in their respective markets. Mark is a Dean’s Honors graduate of the Ivey MBA program and Graduate of the Computer Science Honors program at Acadia University. Mark has led his companies to PROFIT HOT 50 and PROFIT HOT 100 awards, and was nominated by the Dean of the Richard Ivey School of Business for the prestigious business award of Canada’s “Top 40 Under 40”.
Michael Vogel is a prolific engineer with a history of successful product launches from concept, design and launch to market. He involves himself at all levels including business and technical design aspects. Michael is also a regular speaker on Bitcoin and Blockchain, and is frequently cited in the media as a subject expert, with recent interviews in CoinTelegraph, News1130 (radio) and on the Corus radio network.
Dominic Vogel has an established track record as a cyber security leader. He has a wide-range of experience overseeing numerous projects including security strategy development, policy development, endpoint security, and threat management in a multitude of industries (financial services, logistics, transportation, government, telecommunications, and critical infrastructure). Dominic actively participates in the local Vancouver security community and is a regular cyber security expert for Global BC (TV), CKNW (radio), News1130 (radio), and the Vancouver Sun (newspaper). Dominic is a firm believer in delivering sustainable security that supports and protects business goals. Having worked within large and globally diverse organizations he has extensive security experience that has been forged over the past decade as an information security professional.
Derrek Fahl is a member of Miller Thomson’s Blockchain, Cryptocurrency and Smart Contracts Team, and has extensive knowledge of the world of blockchain, cryptocurrencies, coins, tokens, smart contracts and raising capital using these emerging technologies, both through conventional securities offerings and Initial Coin Offerings (ICO’s). Derrek has worked for companies in regards to their offering of security tokens (private placements and ICOs), utility tokens (often under the SAFT protocol), stablecoins, token exchanges and other means of secondary market trades. Derrek‘s work for his clients includes planning or reviewing corporate and offering structures, drafting and reviewing whitepapers, offering documents and subscriptions, interactions with securities regulators and other capital market participants, and communications with external advisors, including tax and finance.
Bruce Silcoff is a serial entrepreneur and visionary with proven track record of Incubating game-changing technology solutions, providing thought leadership and strategic guidance via board participation. He is a Pioneer in the development and execution of loyalty, recognition & incentive programs. Highly experienced in Loyalty, Health & Wellness, Private Equity, Social Media, Data, Payments and is Currently CEO of Shyft Network. Shyft is disrupting the broken way our world thinks about and manages digital identity. Mo Kumarsi has over 15 years of startup and business development experience, Mo currently provides consultation for multiple projects in the blockchain space. Throughout 2017, Mr. Kumarsi directed the management of business lead generation, marketing and long-term relationship building for many businesses in the traditional world and Blockchain space.
Ashton Addison is a business degree graduate, entrepreneur, and digital enthusiast with experience in computer technology, webdev, SEO and internet marketing, finance and financial markets, accounting, economics, cryptocurrency, blockchains and distributed blockchain technologies. Mr. Addison has been involved in the cryptocurrency community since 2013, including contributing at local bitcoin meetups acting as a researcher and independent journalist under his own fintech news broadcasting networks the Crypto Coin Show and EventChain Media. Ashton founded EventChain.io a Smart Ticketing platform on the Ethereum blockchain designed to solve a long list of issues with the centralized event ticketing industry. Sonali Giovino Perera has been working in the crypto space full time for about a year. She is a passionate advocate of educating the masses about how blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies operate in the space. How its serving the evolution of how we do business and engage with each other, taking security and transparency to new levels. She teaches and host live workshops weekly for groups on crypto fundamentals, blockchain technology, trading, alt coins, ICO’s, mining, chart analysis and much more. Now she is spearheading blockchain events production in order to showcase the top trending companies, new innovations, answer burning questions that are rising in the blockchain space. Jag Sidhu is the CTO of Blockchain Foundry and a co-founder and current lead developer of the Syscoin project, a decentralized cryptocurrency. As an expert in blockchain technology, he is credited as the creator of Syscoin’s unique Z-DAG (Zero Confirmation Directed Acyclic Graph) protocol, which prevents double-spend events. Jag has nearly 20 years of software development experience. He also specializes in machine learning, artificial intelligence, client/server development, and distributed systems. Jag holds a Bachelors of Technology, Computer Science, from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Matt Lockyer wrote the Ethereum ERC-998 standard for Composable Tokens and his work on Token Curated Registries (TCRs) has been published on a16z's crypto reading list. Matt founded and operates the NFTy Magicians - a group of over 300 blockchain developers - as a pendant to the Ethereum Foundation. He currently advises projects on their smart contract architecture and token engineering processes with a background in full stack development, computer science, UX research, public speaking and university lecturing.
Matthew Unger found early success in his career, becoming one of the youngest executive financial advisors in Investors Group Financial Services’ history at the age of 22. Featured in Canada’s leading financial industry publication, Investment Executive, Matthew experienced award-winning success (i.e. Pillar Awards, President’s Club) by unpacking complex financial problems and providing simplified solutions. In 2015, Matthew co-founded a fintech company with a product designed to automate and digitize all workflows and tasks for financial advisors; much of the product’s technical architecture and framework have since been incorporated into Planswell’s expanded FinTech platform. In 2016, Matthew completed MIT Media Lab’s Fintech Innovation Management program with distinction and also holds a management certificate from MIT Sloan in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Business Strategy.
