Description
We invite you to attend the 2019 Law and Freedom conference, presented by the Runnymede Society. Join us for some lively debate and discussion about the most important issues in Canadian constitutional law today — and how they impact freedom, policy, and society.
The conference will commence with a reception on Friday, January 11, 2019 featuring a reception and keynote presentation with Justice David Stratas of the Federal Court of Appeal. He will be participating in what promises to be a lively conversation with lawyer Asher Honickman on the topic of "Judges interpreting laws: do words matter much anymore?".
The rest of the conference will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2019, with four outstanding panels and debates featuring leading Canadian scholars, judges, and practitioners. Topics include:
Debate on the #MeToo movement and its effects on the presumption of innocence;
Discussion of the s. 33 notwithstanding clause and its implications for democracy and constitutionalism;
Panel discussion on the growing presence of "Charter Values" in Canadian public law; &
Comparative constitutional approaches to freedom of religion in Canada and the U.S. following the Trinity Western University and Masterpiece Cakeshop decisions.
A full schedule can be downloaded here (right-click and save as).
The conference will conclude with a dinner at Hart House, featuring a keynote presentation from Claire Lehmann, the Australian writer and founder of Quillette, an online platform for free thought and debate.
Prices include, except where otherwise stated, passed hors d'œuvres for the Friday reception, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday.
Through on-campus debates and discussion, the Runnymede Society ensures that free speech and intellectual diversity remain an active part of Canadian law school life. We provide outstanding support and opportunities for intellectual enrichment, networking, and professional development, including by providing members opportunities to meet professors, practitioners, and judges supportive of our mission.
