BECAUSE WE ARE GIRLS | 85 Minutes | Documentary | Original Language | Location
After decades of silence, three sisters from a conservative South Asian family reveal that they were sexually abused by an older relative, as they work to confront the cultural systems that make this issue taboo within their community.
...
Director Baljit Sangra follows Jeeti, Kira, and Salakshana, not only as they take their abuser to trial, but more importantly as they work up the courage to confront their parents on why something like this was allowed to happen within their home. We take a journey through their past with home videos and Bollywood movies that help to examine the toxic ideas that demanded their silence, hoping to chart a better path for their own daughters. These three women aren’t afraid to question the import afforded to men in South Asian cultures. In a unique portrait of sexual abuse survivors, Because We Are Girls gives no oxygen to the abuser or his crimes, instead focusing on the healing process for the victims and the struggle to openly discuss this issue within their family and community.
Co-presented with Hot Docs.
