EARLY FILMS OF DE PALMA & DE NIRO: GREETINGS
New Restoration from the American Genre Film Archive!
Part of a De Palma & De Niro Double-Bill!
April 14, 2019
6:30pm – The Wedding Party
8:30pm – Greetings
The first film to receive an X certificate in the United States – for adult/offensive language, mild sex/nudity, but primarily for antisocial content and a detailed breakdown of how to evade the draft – Greetings (1968) is a freewheeling satire focusing on a trio of twentysomething friends, a conspiracy theorist (Jonathan Warden), a filmmaker (Gerrit Graham), and a voyeur (Robert De Niro), as they shamble about their lives and try to avoid the Vietnam War by any means necessary.
De Palma indulges his inner Godard (before the Hitchcock obsession took over), weaving a very loose narrative that includes the JFK assassination transposed onto a woman’s naked body, “computer dating”, and explicit references to Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966) - which De Palma would take a step further in his own later Blow Out (1981).
De Niro’s character, a voyeuristic would-be filmmaker/De Palma stand-in, returned for Hi Mom! (1970) – originally titled Son of Greetings – playing the same character, now a disillusioned vet and socially awkward pornographer, making a pretty clear trajectory from Greetings to God’s Lonely Man a few years later in Taxi Driver. Meanwhile, JFK nut Jonathan Warden almost steals the show, giving rambling drugged-up late 60s Dennis Hopper a run for his money.
Greetings was the first commercial success for De Palma and De Niro, enough of a hit that they were able to finally release their first film The Wedding Party – screening at 6:30pm as the first part of this double-bill! – 3 years after it was finished.
Content Warning: Greetings has lines of dialogue that contain homophobic/racial slurs.
