Description
The «Amanat» motion picture narrates three stories of how the Russian Empire suppressed the Kazakh nation. This starts with a colonial policy (1837-1847) by wiping out indigenous population of the Kazakh lands and beheading the last Kazakh khan and heir of Genghis khan – Kenesary Khan who chose death to suppression to the Russian tsar. Then (1917-1952) Stalin’s totalitarian system obliterated the entire Kazakh intelligentsia including the protagonist of the film, a Kazakh historian Ermukhan Bekmakhanov who tried to restore justice by writing a PhD dissertation on Kenesary Khan’s national liberation movement and segregation policies undertaken by the Russian Empire. And the third story is about the Soviet Stallin and Khrushev period (1960-1980) which is now known for gradual erasing of the historical memory of the genocide of the Kazakh people. This story is revealed through a young Kazakh journalist Ramazan Duman. For the first time in history, Kazakh Cinematographers dared to address a topic, which had been long under the seal of taboo, and consequently provoked a strong reaction of the general public and an unprecedented box office success.
