Description
The Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) is hosting its Annual Conference in Ottawa on October 3 – 4, 2018 at the Fairmont Château Laurier
Be part of the industry presence in Ottawa!
While hearing from excellent speakers about topics of vital importance to the industry, you can talk to federal government representatives about key policy issues facing the industry.
The Canadian seafood industry creates 80,000 direct jobs, mainly in coastal and rural communities, and accounts for $7 billion in exports to 139 countries around the world. We are helping to feed the world. The largest export markets for Canadian seafood products include the United States (63% of exports), China (14%), European Union (7%), and Japan (5%). The Council is looking towards advantages created by recent free trade agreements, such as South Korea, CETA, and CPTPP.
The fisheries sector needs to accelerate investment to extract more value from what it harvests and processes. A recent study has indicated that the sector is missing out on $600 million annually in additional revenue. Additionally, growing global demand for protein, including fish and seafood, points to more export growth opportunities and the need for investment.
Canada has a strong reputation for sustainable fisheries management. On top of the robust regulatory regime, two-thirds of our wild capture production (80 per cent by value) is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, the international gold standard for measuring fishery sustainability. This contrasts with only about 10% of the world’s fisheries being certified. The sector is also proud of the role it plays in marine conservation. Many harvesting activities have a much lower footprint than years ago.
Another important aspect of the sector that deserves to be recognized is the level of Indigenous participation in the sector. In BC, roughly one-third of the sector is Indigenous participation. In Nunavut, enterprises are wholly-owned by Indigenous communities. In Atlantic Canada, many companies have various business partnerships and other relationships with Indigenous communities.
These and many other issues are among the topics that will be discussed at FCC’s 2018 Annual Conference. The theme of Promoting a Prosperous Sector and Healthy Resource encapsulates how the Council and the sector is working towards the future.
