Hard Core Logo is the ultimate Canadian road trip of punk rock oblivion and rejuvenation, brotherhood and chaos. Joe Dick (Hugh Dillon), Billy Tallent (Callum Keith Rennie), John Oxenburger (John Pyper-Ferguson), and Pipefitter (Bernie Coulson) are Hard Core Logo — Vancouver’s legendary, but now defunct, punk band. Dick coaxes his former bandmates to overcome personal differences and reunite for a benefit concert for their ageing punk mentor, Bucky Haight, who has been shot. But Joe also wants the band to hit the road again, spelling the beginning of the end as group leaders Joe and Billy bring their ongoing personal feud along for the ride. Director Bruce McDonald, who appears in the film as the director of a documentary about the reunion and tour, is totally in his element, combining great concert footage (notably at Vancouver’s famous Commodore Ballroom, with cameos from the Modernettes, Flash Bastard, D.O.A., Joey Ramone and more) with biting mockumentary as the band members make candid confessions, stab each other in the back, and make a glorious ruckus onstage.
McDonald’s film - the Toronto Film Critics Association's #1 Canadian film in 1996 and an undisputed Can-Con classic – and the original book by Michael Turner have inspired countless re-imaginings including McDonald’s sequel Hard Core Logo 2, a recent stage musical Hard Core Logo: Live and the graphic novel Hard Core Logo: Portrait of a Thousand Punks by Nick Craine, re-released in a brand new edition from House of Anansi Press with an introduction by Lynn Crosbie and tear-out guitar chord book (!). Craine pits the legendary Hard Cores against a collage-like backdrop of bars, hotel rooms, the road, and the Canadian Prairies, weaving together a patchwork narrative of found art, dialogue, songs, and incidental bystanders to make a unique cover version of the cult hit.
