FGM: An ongoing national and
international scandal
Dexter Dias QC, human rights
lawyer, researcher at Cambridge and Harvard and part-time Crown Court judge,
explores one of the greatest human rights issues facing the world today: Female
Genital Mutilation.
FGM is a criminal offence, child
abuse, one of the most egregious forms of gender-based violence and the social
control of women and yet there are 65,000 at-risk girls in the UK. And 200
million women worldwide live with the devastating legacy of this harmful
practice. How can we protect them?
Dexter Dias has fought against
this practice in the UK and internationally, writing reports to the United
Nations and chairing and co-authoring a major report to the Parliamentary
Inquiry into FGM which resulted in significant changes in the law including new
High Court powers to intervene to protect girls from mutilation. Join us
to examine the serious obstacles that still lie ahead to change the future of
millions of young women.
“small talks” are a new type of event at Godolphin & Latymer where we explore contemporary issues in a less formal setting than the Public Lectures Series.
