Description
PROTOTYPE, from local filmmaker and film critic Blake Williams, is a work of speculative science fiction that takes its starting point from the 1900 hurricane that destroyed the town of Galveston, Texas.
Stereoscopic images of the storm’s aftermath are but one of the inspirations for PROTOTYPE, “an audacious multi-part work of personal historiography that, like Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day, is made partly of true esoterica and partly invents an alternate past of retro-futurist technology and dreamed digressions.” — Daniel Kasman, MUBI Notebook
“Watching PROTOTYPE, I imagined my experience as analogous to what the early audiences of Georges Méliès must’ve felt. We can almost conceive of a virtuoso magician orchestrating it all from behind the screen with various tricks and contraptions. It’s the greatest magic lantern show ever filmed.” — Josh Cabrita, The Georgia Straight
PROTOTYPE (63 min) will be preceded by three mind-melting 3D shorts:
Details of Pollock’s White Light (2019, Ken Jacobs, 8 min) — World Premiere! Twelve Tales Told (2014, Johann Lurf, 4min) — Toronto Premiere of the 3D Version! more than everything (2018, Rainer Kohlberger, 13 min) — Canadian Premiere!
This screening is co-presented by MDFF and Cinema Scope.
